Dr. Berger received his Bachelor of Science in Experimental Psychology from Emory University in 1983, where he studied neurobiology and computer science. At Emory, he worked as a laboratory assistant to Dr. Jerome Sutin (neuroanatomy) and Dr. Darryl Neill (behavioral neurobiology). As an undergraduate, he also worked at Westinghouse Electric Company's Supercomputing Division.  Dr. Berger was a visiting student at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel in 1982.

Dr. Berger completed the Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program at Weill Cornell Medical College (with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Rockefeller University) from 1983 to 1992. His doctoral training under Dr. Donald Reis focused on cerebrovascular disease, a subject he has pursued throughout his professional career. His doctoral examination covered cerebrovascular disease (Dr. Reis), biochemistry (Dr. Owen Griffith), and behavioral neuroscience (Dr. Gary Gibson). He returned to the Weizmann Institute of Science in 1986 to focus on 3D brain imaging research.

Dr. Berger completed his internship at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital, and his residency in Radiology at Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he also completed a 2-year fellowhip in Neuroradiology.  In 1996, Dr. Berger published one of the first comprehensive articles on the medical-legal aspects of teleradiology, in the American Journal of Radiology.
